“The Artistic Journey of an Autistic Anime Visionary”
My name is “Adam Cohen”.
I am an upcoming artist with Asperger’s Syndrome, which is a form of Autism.
My aim is to create, combine and visualize many elements of my own artistic passions, to create some truly intriguing and interesting artworks! Art pieces that I’ve already crafted and are on display, include the “Incarcerated Innocence Painting” and the “Torabunny and Magearna QT Drawing”.
My main goal is to create expansive and imaginative imagery, which makes connections between ideas that have not been fully realized before, such as utilizing special characters and symbols from genres like video games, comics and anime. This is done to put my unique spin on their styles.
Thank you so much for visiting my site!
Title of Artwork – “Whimsy of the Witch”
Description: After playing through the game of “Pokémon Sword”, the member of my team known as “Hatterene”, quickly became my favorite pocket monster of the 8th Generation. “Hatterene’s” stats, elegant yet deadly design, and mischievously cute nature won me over, as she led me to victory in countless battles of fun competitions. Another reason for my favoritism towards “Hatterene”, is that when I was growing up, the feelings associated with the Holiday of Halloween were extremely entertaining for me to embrace. Due to this, entities based on horror icons and popular monsters became easy for me to favor, and the macabre nature of witches was no exception! Using these passionate feelings as motivation, I crafted this drawing that shows off “Hatterene’s” quirky nature, with accompanying hints of danger and curiosity.
Title of Artwork – “Madness on the Moonlit Cliff”
Description: As the many generations of the “Pokémon Series” come and go, each one helped to introduce and popularize a wide selection of creatures, with varying attributes and intricate designs. During the arrival of “Generation Seven” in the mid-2010s, one of the pocket monsters that caught my interest was one based on a stone-like werewolf named “Lycanroc”. The creature’s menacing gaze, rambunctious attitude, and penchant for rebelling against their foes struck a chord with me at the time, since I saw these traits as being unique to one who wants to follow their own path. Given this concept, I wanted to play on the idea that this pocket monster would be a solitary figure that lay in wait for opportunities, upon a high-altitude location in the middle of a Full Moon. A manic expression and intimidating posture were added to the drawing, to help establish this creature as one who wants to stray off the trodden paths of many and find their own purpose, within their immediate environment.
Title of Artwork – “Encounters of the Kamaitachi Kind”
Description: Over the many years of growing up with and playing through games in the “Pokémon Series”, I became fascinated with learning about the backgrounds behind my favorite creatures and understanding where the inspirations for their designs came from. Later on, I also realized that because the company of “Game Freak” comes from Japan, some of that country’s culture helped to inspire the creation of many different pocket monsters. One example of my favorite creatures, that was inspired by Japanese Folklore, was the “Fourth Generation Pokémon named Weavile”, which was based on a yokai named the “Kamaitachi”. According to Japanese mythology, the “Kamaitachi” is a weasel spirit with sickle-like nails, that resides upon the tops of large mountains. I found that elements of these ghostly figures were translated well into the designs of “Weavile, their pre-evolution Sneasel, and a distant relative of theirs named Sneasler”. Examples of this include the sharp claws they attack their opponents with, a “Dark/Ice” or “Poison/Fighting” dual typing which frames their personality as mischievously cunning, and a preference to reside upon higher altitudes with lower temperatures. In the end, my adoration for such uniquely awesome creatures helped motivate me to create this drawing, which shows off a family of these pocket monsters in enjoyable poses.
Title of Artwork – “Torabunny and Magearna QT”
Description: When it comes to my interests in fictional universes and their dynamic rosters, a concept that developed was one where the characters within each world would feel lively and developed as if they were non-fictional/real people. To me, the simple templates with next to no variations upon their original ideas, fall flat and fail to gain any interest or emotion from a viewing audience. Then comes the twist of the century, that being the concept of merging together two different characters from two different verses, which share some qualities in common with each other. “Tora” and “Poppi” from “Xenoblade Chronicles Two” are one of my favorite quirky duos in video games, due to how they interact with one another, while “Diggersby” and “Magearna” from the “Pokémon Series” are some of my favorite pocket monsters. With the characters sharing likenesses in their designed proportions and origins, I decided to conceptualize what they would look like combined together and then created this Art Piece.
Title of Artwork – “Scrambled Schemers”
Description: Villains are an iconic mainstay in video game stories since they serve as the main antagonistic force behind the scenes, which challenges the beliefs and ideas of the protagonist(s). One of the best examples of such an enemy is the nefarious yet humorous “Doctor Eggman”, who challenges the heroic merits of “Sonic the Hedgehog” and his animal friends. Unlike the heroes, this mad scientist sees the power-wielding artifacts called the “Chaos Emeralds”, mainly as a tool that can be used to fulfill his own selfish desires, like world domination or amusement-park construction. On many occasions, ”Doctor Eggman” fights his nemesis while utilizing a collection of his finest contraptions/weapons, in order to prevent what he perceives as a spin-dashing disaster from working its way to a victory for the greater good. Within this image that I’ve created, “Doctor Eggman” is looking on with his minions “Orbot” and “Cubot”, in preparation for their next scheme that could help them achieve their dastardly desires.
Title of Artwork – “Evoking Excitement”
Description: Out of the many holidays that cultures around the world continue to celebrate to this day, Halloween has continued to be one of my personal favorites to spectate. I recall walking around to many different houses as a young child, with sparkling curiosity in my eyes as I took in all of the frightening costumes and vibrant decorations, which surrounded my neighborhood. Even to this day, the atmosphere of such a horrifying yet pleasant holiday helped to leave a long-lasting imprint upon me and made it a hobby of mine, to find many examples of such scary imagery being celebrated and utilized within examples of fictional media. Two of my favorites were the character of “Lucy Loud” from the “Nickelodeon TV Show – The Loud House” and the terrifyingly powerful “Evokers and Vexes from Minecraft”. As a tribute to the impactful holiday of Halloween, I decided to combine elements from both of these chilling sources and create a piece of imagery that can best be defined as scary yet charming.
Title of Artwork – “Raging Sho Minazuki”
Description: The “Red Lanterns of DC Comics” are known for their never-ending quests of vengeance and for making sure that all criminals are punished for their crimes. In the case of “Sho Minazuki”, who is the “Red Lantern Representative” I’ve chosen from the “Persona Series”, his goals end up aligning with theirs since he wants to eradicate those who ruined his life. As a child, “Sho” was experimented on by a group of heartless scientists and implanted with an artificial construct, that gave him a second consciousness named “Minazuki” which works in tandem with his actions. Years later, this individual managed to escape his horrible predicament and swore revenge against the world that had previously brought him nothing but pain and suffering. Working with forces he didn’t fully understand, “Sho Minazuki” allowed for his temper to guide his actions and seek out those that wronged him, in order to make them pay dearly.
Title of Artwork – “Hope Dwells Within the Velvet Room”
Description: Throughout the journeys of many heroes within popular media, one constant that can be apparent to all who view their journey is that they never lose hope, as they attempt to achieve their goals. A somewhat unique deviation to this precedent is when the “Main Protagonist of Persona Five”, is incarcerated and charged for a heinous crime that he never actually committed. Over the story of this iconic RPG, the “Phantom Thief named Joker ” works alongside others in similar predicaments, with the goal of righting the wrongs and vile misdeeds that litter the avenues and paths of their society at large. Among these companions are the “Wardens of the Velvet Room”, named “Caroline, Justine, and Lavenza”, who work to help rehabilitate our protagonist and make sure he doesn’t lose sight of where he is headed. In the story, since the lead character wields a power known as the “Wild Card”, they understand how “One who wields such Great Potential” can make the world a better place. These actions are key as to why for my “Persona x DC Comics” Series, I decided to draw them as members and an Embodiment of Hope, within “Detective Comics’ Blue Lantern Corps”.
Title of Artwork – “Compassionate Calculations”
Description: Among all of “DC Comics’ Lantern Corps”, the “Indigo Tribe” stands out to me as its most intriguing and contradictory group, due to how its members are brought together. For those who don’t know, the individuals of this team are made up of some of the universe’s most vicious and vindictive sociopaths, who are made to feel nothing but compassion and repent for their mistakes. This is due to the “Indigo Rings” essentially brainwashing those who committed such evil acts and “teaching” them to realize and regret their previous transgressions. Since I was adding a member of the “Persona Series” to this group, I chose “Labrys”, who was not only manipulated by others to perform heinous acts but also utilized great amounts of compassion to overcome her previous mistakes. Because of this, I crafted a narrative within this drawing where she “willingly” joined the “Indigo Tribe”, due to her desire of wanting to help others overcome their painful pasts.
Title of Artwork – “Living up to His Legacy”
Description: At the time of this drawing’s inception, I was chatting with a group of friends about the lore of “DC Comics’ Lantern Corps” and how each one recruits its members. The idea later came to me about which characters from other fictional verses, would best fit into each of the “Lantern Corps”. After contemplating which verse to select, I chose the “Persona Series” due to its immense popularity and beloved mainstays. For the position of the sacred “White Lantern”, the individual in question needed to be someone who was full of life and was capable of wielding such immense strength. As such, the lovely lady of the “Velvet Room” named “Elizabeth”, was the perfect choice as “She who Governs Power”.
Title of Artwork – “Incarcerated Innocence”
Description: Throughout my many years of playing through the “Generations of the Pokémon Series”, the motto that I’ve always followed, was for me to use the creatures that were my favorites from each region and disregard most outside factors. However, an unofficial organization by the name of “Smogon” has become much more popular in recent years, and has begun creating “tier lists” and “ranked metagames” for select categories of pocket monsters. These are usually ranked based on “usage percentages” and not “competitive metrics” like stats and abilities. This gained the personal anger of non-competitive players like myself, who were used to seeing each creature as unique and able to utilize strategies that others couldn’t really replicate. Furthermore, it felt as if restrictions were being placed upon us by outside forces, regarding what “Pokémon” we “should” use and which ones to discard. Due to the fact that this was in direct opposition to my own beliefs which include carving out my own paths in life, it led me to create this painting that showed off my feelings on this problematic issue. In this art piece, the main protagonist of the “Pokémon Series” called “Ash Ketchum”, who usually follows his own ideas and beliefs that all creatures can be used viably in battle, is restricted and forced to kneel before the gaseous plague of the “Smogon” Council.
Title of Artwork – “Femme Favorites”
Description: Having taken a liking to many different types of fictional series throughout the years, like video games, comics, and anime, I have cataloged a large list of characters that I consider to be my personal favorites. A trend that I’ve noticed with the characters which have gained my favor and intrigue, is that they usually have larger-than-life personalities and designs that complement their abilities and placements within their worlds, along with a passionate willingness to make a path for themselves that suits their blossoming strengths. An example of this comes from the character of “Neo Politan from RWBY”, whose design not only reflects her ire towards not being able to fit in with the rest of society but also a clever motif based upon the varying flavors of a cold dish. This is fitting due to “revenge on the heroes” being one of her prime motivations since she believes they were responsible for killing her best friend. Another example would be the “Heartless Armed Angel named Aigis from Persona Three”, who despite her exaggerated title, grew over the course of her story to become more accustomed to the human world and not see all of her actions as “sequences of code”. After accumulating many such individuals whom I’ve grown fond of, I decided to spread my feelings over a canvas and paint it with various detailed examples of imagery, to let the world know what types of characters are my preferred favorites.
